From the world of comics:

  • Brian K Vaughan
  • Brad Meltzer
  • Jeph Loeb

From the world of Buffy:

  • Stephen Deknight

Joss also annoucned in a post on Whedonesque that Doug Petrie would be joining the list also:

"Nice article. It was written before I had a chance to talk to Petrie. He's in.

There's other peeps I'd love to have, but a lot of them are busy and I've got to make sure I've got the peeps already named orgabanized. It's very confusing, running a show entirely from one's computer.

More revelations to come..."

11 December 2006: Conventions - Firefly Cast Turn up to Cancelled Convention

Booster Events

After the last minute cancellation of Booster Events' Big Damn Flanvention, Browncoats and their heroes rallyed round to salvage the event 500 people paid thousands of dollars for.

Thursday evening saw Adam Baldwin turn up and hang out with the hundred or so attendees who had already arrived there before the cancellation was announced.

Friday saw a huge shindig in the hotel bar attended by the 200 - 300 people who had come out regardless of the cancellation. Mark Sheppard spent the day signing autographs and posing for pictures. The evening saw Nathan Fillion arrive with a box of goodies from his closet which he proceeded to give out to those who had travelled the furthest to be there, accompanied by Alan Tudyk, Jonathan Woodward and Christina Hendricks (accompanied by a first date!) all of whom partied into the night with the Browncoats. Brett Matthews from the Serenity Comics also turned up with Dark Horse and copies of the Serenity comic which he signed.

Saturday: Multiverse, the company resposible for the Firefly MMORPG due for release in 2008, paid for busses for the short trip to the secret location where there were dealers selling merchandise and Q & A Sessions with Firefly composer Greg Edmondson, Multiverse and others. The evening saw a trip to Clare Kramer's new club which she rushed to complete and open two weeks early so that Browncoats could party. Once again the cast turned out in force, with Nathan Fillion, Ron Glass, Morena Baccarin, Michael Fairman, Mark Sheppard, Jonathan Woodward, Yan Feldman, Christina Hendriks, Clare Kramer, James Leary, Camden Toy, Greg Edmondson and even Michael Muhney (Sheriff Lamb from Veronica Mars) turned up and drunk the bar dry.

Sunday saw another trip to the secret offsite loaction where Tim Minear turned up to show a video he made from clips of all his TV shows and did a live commentary to Firefly episode Ariel.

This whole event was put on by a small group of Browncoats who had themselves paid to be at the event, in a very short space of time, helped by the generous donations reaching $4,500, from sympathetic fellow Browncoats around the world, and the extreme generosity of the actors and crew (some of whom were not even booked for the convention and none of whom had been paid) who gave their own time to make sure that the attendees had a great time despite the convention being cancelled, and many volunteers to help it all run smoothly.

Booster Events, who have remained silent all weekend, have now resurrected their website and left the following message on their forum:

"Booster Entertainment would like to apologize to everyone for the great inconvenience that was imposed on all this past weekend. We understand everyone has questions, which we will try and answer in a timely fashion. The website has been put back up per customer request.
We again apologize for our poor notice in the cancellation of the Flanvention.
Booster Entertainment will not answer personal emails nor PMs, but will answer everyone in the open forums. Please do not post foul language or threats as those posts will be deleted. Please also allow for the heavy site traffic in waiting for responses.
Sincerely,
Booster Entertainment"

Anyone who held a ticket to this or any other of Booster's Events should make their feelings known, politely at www.boosterevents.com.

You can get help and advice at Flanvention Helpline which is an independant website set up to offer help and advice to attendees.

Michael Muhney tells how he became involved in the Back Up Bash at http://community.livejournal.com/rack_of_lamb/185433.html.

Tim Minear puts his own 'fan vid' on You Tube Minear's Stuff.

8 December 2006: Conventions - Big Damn Flanvention Cancelled - Back Up Bash Back On

Booster Events

Last night Booster Events took down their website leaving only the following message:

"Booster Entertainment apologizes for the great inconvenience, but due to unforeseen circumstances, Flanvention is cancelled. An official notice will be posted within 10 days."

This happened just one day before the convention was due to start and after rumours had been circulating that all the guests had been told the event was cancelled even though the official line was that, although there had been a minor glitch with the hotel, the convention was definately still on. By the time this announcement came many attendees had already arrived at the convention hotel and many more were on their way or about to leave.

Browncoats have never been deterred by a snall thing like cancellation and the Back Up Bash is back on. The organisers are working with the hotel and the guests to try and pull of something to salvage the weekend. Please go to www.californiabrowncoats.org for up to date info on what is happening there and if you would like to make a donation. You can also visit http://flanventionhelpline.blogspot.com/ for advice and information if you are a ticket holder.

After the announcement, The Bedlam Bards, who were due to attend the flan, arrived and played for those waiting in the lobby for any kind of news. They got some small compensation when Adam Baldwin turned up and hung out with fans in the bar for a couple of hours, promising to return today with Nathan Fillion.

Adam was good enough to post the following message on the Firefly Official Posting Board:

"Thank you to everyone that so kindly went out of their way to say hello to me, and those that found it in their heart to buy us a few rounds... :- )

The love in the Hilton last night was enriching for us all!

Thanks for again sharing it with me. : - )

Browncoats Rock!

A.B."

Latest Update: Mark Sheppard has turned up at the hotel and Greg Edmondson has also promised he will still attend.

There will be a shindig tonight in the lobby bar area. This is a change in schedule: Here's the announcement:

"Sorry for this very last minute change of plans but the SoCal shindig has been moved to Friday night. Same place, in the hotel bar and lobby. It will start at 8pm and of course we plan to close down the bar!!! We've encouraged the Flan attendees to dress for the event as they want a chance to wear the fancy clothes they brought along but don't feel like you have to dress up. I'm sure there will be plenty of thematic t-shirts!

Hope to see many of you tonight!!!

Lynn & James"

I will try and keep updating this site with the latest news, but as I am on UK time I may not be able to keep up with the latest info. If you are attending/planning to attend, please keep checking the following sites and Whedonesque thread.

www.californiabrowncoats.org

I hope everyone attending still has a great time.

29 November 2006: Big Damn Flanvention Faces Cancellation

Booster Events

With just over a week to go to the convention Browncoats have been looking forward to for almost a year, Booster Events have announced that they may have to cancel the sold out event due to 'financial difficulties'. Here's what the announcement said:

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Boosters is experiencing financial difficulties. We are doing everything in our power to facilitate Flan 2, but at this point, it is uncertain that we will be able to obtain financing in time for the event. We will update you daily in the Flan 2 forum. Anyone with airline tickets who might want to cancel, will need to do so immediately. If we are unable to obtain the needed financing by Friday, Dec. 1st, the event will be cancelled.

Browncoats didn't take the cancellation of their TV show lying down and they won't take the cancellation of their con lying down either. With the fate of The Big Damn Flanvention still up in the air, an alternate fan run event is already in then works for all those folks who have bought tickets, made travel plans and hotel reservations and still want to have a great weekend. People who have tickets to the Big Damn Flanvention should check out http://flanventionhelpline.blogspot.com/ for help and advice on what to as well as the latest updates on the situation.

8 November 2006: Astonishing X-Men - Delays Explained

Serenity

Joss Whedon's second run of Astonishing X-Men has been hit by various delays, starting out with bi-monthly issues and recently isses #19 and #20 being delayed. Joss recently spoke out to reassure fans that the delays were not due to him handing in scripts late. Nick Lowe from the X-Men office has clarified the issue in a Q&A session with Newsarama. Here's what was said:

Q: "spike" - Joe, it's fairly obvious that Astonishing X-Men has endured a lot of delays in its run with Whedon and Cassaday. However, Whedon has said that he's only delivered two late scripts early on in the piece and he was confused by Marvel's choice to go bi-monthly. Cassaday is working away steadily. So, what's the real reason behind the Astonishing X-Men delays?

JQ: Hey, Spike, Nick Lowe from the X office wanted to field this question.

Nick Lowe: Joss hates fan...

Okay, the real answer is that a lot of little things (an editorial shake-up, among them) led to the current delay and that current delay is causing us to re-plan our overly-optimistic scheduling of the "Unstoppable" arc. I promise that we are getting Astonishing to you as fast as humanly possible.

11 October 2006: Joss Whedon Puts Sequel Rumours to Rest... Sort of

After Joss Whedon's visit to the UK the other week, rumours abounded the net about him a) saying there would be no Serenity Sequel and b) saying he was working on the sequel. Joss took the time to set the matter straight with a post on Whedonesque. Here's what he said:

"Holy Mother of Oats! I turn my back for five minutes (that's how long it takes to admire my lovely back) and the interweb goes banoonoos! Isn't there any ACTUAL news to get wrong? Sorry about all this; it might be best if I just stay off the computer for a while. Or just glut the feed with wild conjecture. Hmm, let's see... I'm me, so... let's glut! Here are some ABSOLUTELY TRUE statements of factiness. Gentlemen, start your websites.

1) Wonder Woman has finally been cast. To no one's surprise, we eschewed all those tired movie and TV personalities and cast the interweb star "Lonelygirl", or whatever her actual name is. Congratulations, whomever!

2) I've got a thirteen episode commitment from the CW, so get ready for the long-awaited "Primative and Cheese Man". She's the first Slayer, he's a meaningless hallucination -- can they put aside their differences long enough to fight crime?

3) "CLEM!" Broadway. The number where he eats Rum Tum Tuggle will make you laugh and cry and throw up in your mouth slightly.

4) I will absolutely, posatively never ever do any kind of Serenity sequel or spinoff unless a studio asks me. Politely. Or meanly, that's cool too.

5) Warren Ellis's beard has a foyer. It's quite nice: shaker furniture, and a cute ceramic umbrella stand.

6) Kelly MacDonald and Gong Li have got to stop fighting over me 'cause who are they embarrassing? Themselves, that's all.

7) I'm tired of me.

Right. Cue chaos. And yes, number seven is more or less true. But my little britjaunt is through (Alexis rocked "All My Sons") and I'm grindstone bound, so I won't be feeding any more rumorsites for a while. There's only one way to stop all this insanity, and that's to produce some actual work for people to write about. So I'll do that.

Here's a thing: when "Firefly" was cancelled, my heart got broke. Sounds a bit much, but it changed me. Not even "Serenity" could patch that wound. I'm wearier, warier -- after all those years as a movie writer, you'd think I'd be prepared for another lesson on my unimportance in the scheme of things, but I wasn't. There are two very separate worlds: the marketplace, and the bustling bazaar that is my brain. The brain place is crowded with goods, ideas, sequels, spinoffs, animated versions, miniseries, radio dramas -- this is just the used goods. All the new wares are in there as well and it's deafening. Once I create a verse I never let go of it. And figuring out how much of my energy should be devoted to reawakening the projects you all love with the actors and characters I all love, and how much should be forging ahead and creating entirely new works (which you are contractually obligated to love) is exhausting. More than you know. You know the horse caught bwtween two pools of water? Add seven pools, and make the horse wicked A.D.D. The other world, the marketplace, I don't even begin to understand or predict. All these rumor of projects or the death of projects... When the two worlds align and something actually happens, whatever it is, you guys know I'll be on this site as soon as I'm allowed to be. And I'll be very very clear. There is no news. Not never, just now. I'm off to lunch with Lonelygirl.

Your Scribe, -j."

13 September 2006: Joss Whedon To Write Runaways

Joss Whedon is set to take over Marvel Comic's Runaways starting in next April year. The current writer, Brian K Vaughan, has stepped down after four years and two volumes of the critically acclaimed, but low selling, series about the runaway children of supervillians. Vaughan will complete another two, three issue arcs, Dead Means Dead, and Live Fast, before handing the pen over to Joss.

Speaking of his thoughts on hearing that Vaughan was leaving, Joss, who has been a fan of the comic said, "I was pissed and then my second thought was it would be fun, and then my sensible self said to stop that, and for God's sake get dressed. First of all, you don't want to follow a great act. you don't want to be the lead-in band for The Stones and then play after them because no one is stayng and it's scary, but just so tempting. I was like, 'I don't think that i can... but I think that I have to do this now.' Then I started talking to Brian and we started riffing on it, and then i was lost. I just knew I was doing it."

Joss has hand picked Michael Ryan as artist and already has plans as to where he'll take the team. "I want to take them somewhere that they've never been before and really have them stuck in an environment where they don't fit in or they really have to shuffle. I am fascinated by the whole concept of not just the Runaways, but the teenagers and their place in this particular... not this Marvel Universe, but in our actual world. So they're road-tripping in a very new way and that's all I'm going to say."

Posting on Whedonesque, Joss also had this to say:

"Oh my god! This is so cool! I can't believe it! I hope he kills Gert -- she's rude to authority figures! Brian Kay Von was cool, but he didn't understand teenagers the way Joss Whedon does -- after all, Joss WAS a teen-ager during the second world war (I think it was the second one) and he totally knows how they speak and what they wear and how they can learn to be more polite and hygenic. Look for this book to EXPLODE with hygiene now that Joss "bathes monthly" Whedon has it. What can we expect from this soon-to-be-visionary book? A few things that never occured to "Bitties at the BK"V, that's for sure.

1) Sex.

2) WAY more Wolverine. He so cute and popular.

3) Old people. They're so cute and popular. ("Assemble, Aunt May's Avengers!" Goosebumps. Right now. Goosebumps.)

4) Sex, but the other kind.

5) Run... Towards! Runtowards. New title. Why are they such fraidies?

6) Two words: Crisis on Infinite Mollys.

Well, I think we all know you're in good paws. (Thank god Michael Ryan can draw.) Brian, your kids are safe with me, except the five or six I'm gonna kill.

See you in the Funny Hell! -joss.

He went on to post:

"I would strongly urge anyone who's thinking of picking up the book but doesn't know it yet to avoid recaps and spoilers (contained, yes, within this very thread!) and just start from the beginning. That's what I did, and that's what made me love the book so much I had to write/destroy it. There's those cute little pocket trades, or genuine back issues if you're a true hunter-gatherer, but the big hardcover is an easy and great way to start (and unlike the pocket-sized, ends with the rather important title to last issue on the last page). If you see what Brian and Adrian did, what I do may suffer by comparison, but it'll have way more resonance. Here endeth the sermon. Puppies! -j"

2 September 2006: Serenity - Watch Joss Whedon's Huugo Acceptance Speech

Serenity Recently won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form. Morena Baccarin accepted the award on behalf of Joss Whedon and the Cast and read an acceptance speech written by Joss. You can view the speech at YouTube or read my transpcript of it below:

Morena: I prepared this whole big speech but then Joss sent me an email. So here I go:

Morena (for Joss): Dear Hugoers, this is an enourmous honour for me. I read science fiction voratiously as a child and the stamp on the book saying winner of Hugo award was as exciting to me as if it had read 'contains free girl'. I don't know who Hugo was or where he came from just that he kicked that Pulitzer guy's ass when it came to choosing awesome lit. It's amazing to me that I could grow up to win this award without writing a book or even really mastering the Enlish language. When I think back to the horrible pain of working with that cast of homely, neurotic, divas it all seems worth it. It wasn't, but it seems like it was. The truth is, this film represents and obsessent love for me, the kind of love I felt only for a very select number of films, albums, but most significantly for the sci-fi novels I read as a child. The Frank Herbert and the Frederick Pole, the Larry Niven and the Rae Bradbury. Geez, I hope some of these guys won Hugos or Morena's gonna look like an idiot up there. Thank you for honouring my obsessions, including this one my latest, thanks to my cast and to everyone who helped bring Serenity incredibly briefly to the big screen. Thank you.

27 July 2006: Wonder Woman News

Joel Silver, exeutive producer of the new Wonder Woman film, has been talking about the film at the recent San Diego Comic Con. According to iF Magazine, he had the following to say:

"Joss is getting closer on the script. When we have a good script we all like, at that point the studio will agree to make it and we’ll go from there. He’s doing a good job. He’s utilizing the lore of the material and it’s an origin story, so you’re dealing with the origin of the story. He’s a very talented writer and he has a great story and ideas and moving our way toward making the movie and maybe next year we can start talking about the movie here."

"It’s finding the kind of movie that will appeal to everyone. It has to work , and it has to have a good character in WONDER WOMAN and be clever and it has to draw you in. Of these three [D.C.] characters. Superman is an alien, Batman is a tough guy and Wonder Woman is a goddess, so you have to work your way through the process."

Speaking of the much rumoured casting, he had this to say:

"She’s young, I don’t think it can be someone you’ve heard of. Once we have the template of the girl, we’ll be able to find her."

Speaking to Comingsoon.net/Superherohype.com, Joel elaborated on why he chose Wonder Woman and why he chose Joss Whedon.

"It was after I made 'The Matrix' when I saw the response of the first tests and I realized the Trinity character was the highest-tested character. This was before they had done 'Charlie's Angels' or 'Elektra' or any of these movies, and I thought, 'Let's just go out and try to make Wonder Woman work,' and I could never find a script that I liked, but we're close now."

And of Joss he said "I just thought he would be the perfect guy to write it. I love Buffy and he's a great writer. I sat down with him and asked if he'd do it, and he wrote me a note where he passed, and in the note, he explained what the movie had to be. There was no way I was going to let him pass, so I hammered him until he said, 'Yes.'"

He went on to confirm: "It's the origin story. It has mythology. Steve Trevor crashes on the island and they go back to Man's World."

And again with the casting: "We have a script and we know where we're going. She'll probably be someone you never saw before, because she's very young, but I think we'll have a good time with it."

Finally, speaking with Empire Online he says: “It’s real, but it’s not real yet. Joss has done a great job on the draft and now he’s tweaking it a little bit so we can give it to the studio in two weeks. And if they believe in it in the way that we think they will, then we’ll be talking about that movie next year.”

So to sum up, the script is almost done, the girl that gets to play Wonder Gal will be a young unknown and they'll probably be making the film next year. Not much given away then really.

Joss Whedon will be given a Vision of the Future award for his work as writer and director of Serenity. The award is given to "a fictional program or movie which portrays a human future in space that has elements which are inspiring, possible, and at least attempts to work within the realm of physics". Speaking of the reasons for giving the award, Foundation Funder Rick Tumlinson said, "Serenity and Firefly are the first new hard science fiction film and TV show in years to acknowledge an economic system, and even give a nod to the reality of space. From its portrayal of a civilization based on terraforming and free trade, to its multi-cultural aspects, it shows a possible future within which its characters go about the usual drama, comedy and skullduggery of any civilization anytime. Add to it the fact the space scenes take place in silence (the scientifically correct way things happen in space) and you have a winner in our books. We want the show back on the air!"

22 May 2006: Not Fade Away Spike Movie Campaign

Ever since Tim Minear let slip that a Spike Movie could be in the works, fans have been eager for more news and rumours have been circulating. MOst recently Joss Whedon has said that he has done all the pitching that he can do and Amy Acker recently told fans at the Not Fade Away convention that, 'it's safe to say that's [Spike Movie] not happening any more, cause if they were, they'd be getting done right now." She went on to say, 'There was supposed to be three of them - one for Spike, a Faith one and also one for Willow. I think it's safe to say that now because it's not going to happen.'

Whedonverse fans, however, have never been ones to let the words 'no', 'not' or 'cancel' stand in their way, and so comes the next fan campaign to keep the Buffyverse alive. Not Fade Away is a campaign run by Support Spike.com to postcard Fox and let them know we still care. For full details on how you can join in go to www.supportspike.com.

I plan to leave fans with a mind-blowing annual after the 24th issue of Astonishing X-Men because that will be when John [Cassaday] and I leave. Everything that I have done and everything that I am going to do is all leading up to one big climax. If I don’t blow some minds with it, then I did the thing called ‘failing’.

“Let me put it this way, I told Cassaday what I had thought of for the second year. His exact words because he was so busy and didn’t have time to draw it were ‘F—k you!R
