11 November 2009: Cancelled

UPDATE: Joss posts on Whedonesque:

Hmm. Apparently my news is not news.

I don't have a lot to say. I'm extremely proud of the people I've worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you'll agree in the coming months. I'm grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again.

I'm off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I've read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you'll know what my next project is. But for now there's a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear.

Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again. -j.

UPDATE Dichen Lachman confirms the cancellation via Twitter "Feel sad though. Joss told us this morning". She also confirmed "Keep watching guys Fox is still showing all 13"

The Hollywood Reporter have broken the news today that Fox have cancelled Dollhouse. While there has been no official word from either Fox or Joss Whedon as yet, it would appear that The Hollywood Reporter's sources are correct and other reliable publications have also picked up the story. Variety report that production has not yet been halted and cite a Fox executive as saying that Dollhouse will complete it's 13 episode order. Other sources are also saying the show will return on 4th December and complete it's run as planned giving Joss the opportunity to finish the story.

4 November 2009: Song for November Challenge

Fan sites Activate Dollhouse and Why I Watch are planning to release a Dollhouse inspired charity album and they need your help. During November they are asking solo artists and bands to create songs which speak about the themes in the show or aspects that they love. If you are (like myself) musically challenged, then there may be someone you know who can help instead.

The winning song will be featured as the album title track and will win a phone call from November herself, Miracle Laurie.

For the full details and how to enter please visit www.activatedollhouse.com. There are also lots of other lovely ways you can help spread the Dollhouse word on the site, so have a browse around. Also check out www.whyiwatch.com, because it's very, very pretty.

13 October 2009: Fox Will Air Full 13-Episode Order

On the back of the increased ratings for Dollhouse Episode 3, Belle Chose, and the impressive DVR numbers for the season premiere that were released this week, more good news comes in the shape of Fox announcing that they will air all 13 episodes of the current season's order. However, it does look unlikely at this stage that the show will get a back 9 order to make a full 22 episode season, and no decisions will be made regarding a third season until the end of the current run.

5 October 2009: Activate Dollhouse Fan Campaign

The ratings for the first two episodes of Dollhouse have not been great and, based on these figures, there is a risk that the show may get cancelled. If you don't want this to happen there are many ways you can help, especially if you are in the US. Here's just a few of them:

US residents:

If you are one of the rare Nielson Families - watch the show live Friday nights on Fox or DVR and watch within 7 days of airing
If you can afford it, buy the episode on iTunes or Amazon Video On Demand
Watch for free online at Hulu or Fox on Demand

Everyone Else (including US Residents)

Talk about it, use your Facebook, Twitter, Live Journal, forums to talk about how much you love Dollhouse and why. Use banners and icons with airing times on them. (You'll find some good one's at Blank_Dolls or make and submit your own)
If you can afford it, buy a "loaner" copy of the Season 1 DVD and lend it out to friends with a note in it telling them how they can view Season 2
If you have suggestions of other ways to help, are a graphic designer or web designer or if you would just like to contribute any way you can, head over to Jossverse where information is being collated to make a real effort to keep this show on the air.

9 August 2009: Fox Execs Talk 'Back Nine' Order

Fox executives Peter Rice and Kevin Reilly spoke to the press at the recent Television Critics Association and had nothing but good things to say about Dollhouse and Joss Whedon. Speaking of the well-publicised struggles at the beginning of the season, Reilly said "I don't think he [Joss] was having any fun and we were a big part of that, and ultimately once he hit his stride, I don't think we spoke. It was an ambitious show. It wasn't a straight ahead linear concept. I felt that struggle and challenged him on some things and he completely engaged on it, gave it thought and attempted to address it. I think it did very well and it never came down to 'you're trying to make me do a show I don't want to do.' It never came to that place. I can't say enough good things about him."

According to iF Magazine, Reilly said that he would be happy if the show continued with the same numbers as season one to give him the confidence to order a back nine episodes to make season 2 a full 22 episode season, and even perhaps a season three.

"We want the same stability we had last year, the same ratings would be just fine. We're looking at the cume as well. I'd like to see it continue its creative consistency, which I believe it will and I want to see a show we can lock in to week in and week out."

16 May 2009: Renewed for Season Two

Although it won't be announced officially until Monday it has been confirmed that Fox has renewed Dollhouse for a second season run of 13 episodes, with an option for further episodes.

Fox asked Joss Whedon to come in last week and pitch a second season of the show and since then negotiations have been ongoing to find a way to bring the show back despite it's low live viewing ratings. In making their decision, Fox have taking into consideration the large DVR and online viewing figures, as well as pre-orders of the DVD, however budget concessions have had to be made and it appears that 20th Century Fox will be contributing a greater portion of the finances for this season.

Other changes include a move from 50 minutes per episode back to a normal 42 as Fox have abandoned their 'remote free TV' experiment, and there will be a shift in the creative direction of the show. Rumours earlier in the week suggested that the show could change direction or 'spin off' from the unaired 13th episode, Epitaph One, which takes place in a 'post-apocolyptic future.'

Finally Joss posted his thoughts on Whedonesque:

Any thread that contains both "Shpadoinkle" and "Yub Yub" is truly exciting. And anything that reunites me with my stunning cast and my crazy staff (or "room fulla Tophers", as I call them) is nothing short of a gift. Heady times, indeed. We're two weeks away from finishing "Cabin" and now it looks like no summer vacation after all. But oh, the terrible things my brain is brewing... Just wait. We'll make it worth it.

Thanks for hanging in.

9 May 2009: Renewal Rumours

Many of you may have heard the rumours over the last 24 hours about Dollhouse being renewed for a second season. The rumours started yesterday when Global TV, the Canadian network that shows Dollhouse and many other Fox shows, updated their Dollhouse page with a 'New Season This Fall' banner, sparking hope among fans everywhere. Fox soon responded with a short statement 'The series has not been renewed yet. Any renewal announcement would be made at the upfront Presentation a week from today." Today Global has removed the banner and apologised for their error via Twitter 'Wishful thinking on the art of one of our producers. Decision yet to be made regarding show's future. Apologies for confusion".

Whilst both Fox and Global have both negated this rumour, many still feel (and hope) that Global were just pre-emptive with their announcement and that this will be shown in a renewal announcement next week. Adding further to the anticipation, Eliza Dushku twittered 'DOLLHOUSE talks are goin' on - it'd be an extravaganza bonanza to return 4 rnd 2!'

As things stand, there has as yet been no official announcement of renewal or cancellation and the fate of the show is exected to be announced next Monday 18th May. Meanwhile, there are various ways you can keep the Dollhouse buzz alive:

11 April 2009: Episode 12 is Season Finale

Although 13 episodes of Dollhouse have been made, Fox recently announced that episode 12, Omega, will be the season finale. This has caused much speculation over what this means for the show's future, but no decision has yet been made as to whether Dollhouse will be renewed or not.

Tim Minear recently posted on Whedonesque to try and clear up the confusion and calm frantic fans. Here's what he said:

Okay. So maybe I can help clarify this somewhat. Because we scrapped the original pilot -- and in fact cannibalized some of its parts for other eps -- we really ended up with 12 episodes. But the studio makes DVD and other deals based on the original 13 number. So we created a standalone kind of coda episode. Which is the mythical new episode 13. The network had already paid for 13 episodes, and this included the one they agreed to let us scrap for parts. It does not include the one we made to bring the number back up to 13 for the studio side and its obligations. We always knew it would be for the DVD for sure, but we also think Fox should air it because it’s awesome.

To reiterate, there has been no decision as yet on Dollhouse's future, and not airing this final episode has no bearing on that decision. Episode 12, Omega, will wrap up the season's storylines and leave some doors open for a second season. Episode 13, Epitah One, will appear on the DVD and is a stand-alone episode reportedly set way in the future.
