12 December 2006: Jewel Staite - Blog Update

Jewel Staite

While wishing that she could be at the Big Damn Flanvention she didn't get a plane ticket for, Jewel Staite posted the following over at her Dear Roj Blog:

"8 December 2006

Merry almost Christmas!

Where to start?

I should be in LA at the Flanvention right now, but as all of you know, that's been cancelled at the last-LAST minute, and so here I sit in Vancouver, wondering what could have been. Sigh. I am so disappointed! I was really looking forward to coming down and seeing everybody once again, having some of my favorite sushi, shopping, and partying with you Flanners, but unfortunately, it just wasn't in the cards. Don't ask me what happened - I truly have very little idea of the actual facts of it - but please know that if I were in LA right now, I'd still come and say hi. Without going into it too much, a lot of us lost quite a bit on this thing, so you're not the only ones (I actually declined an invitation to another event altogether and had to reschedule some other things that were very difficult to get around, but I really wanted to come). What else can I say? It fuckin' sucks. I hope you guys have a great time at the hotel anyway, and hopefully it'll work out next time.

Also: I know the Tribe trailer is up online right now, and thank you to everyone who had such kind words to say about it! (And to the people who didn't, I didn't like your movie trailer either). But let me clarify a few things: this trailer is a work in progress; a lot of the film still hasn't been color-corrected, the sound and effects are temp, and it's still in the making - seriously, I'm still doing reshoots on it in January. It's going to be a fun movie though, lots of action and suspense, a few thrills, creepy things in the woods... But let me set you straight: it's not Lost. It really has nothing to do with Lost, other than the fact that we're on a beautiful (seemingly) deserted island. There are no Daniel Day Kim's, (damn), no Josh Holloways(double damn), no Matthew Fox's (why, God, why??), and no Others... but there is something that will scare the living daylights out of you, trust me. It's not really a horror movie. I detest most horror movies with no point, but this story definitely has one. It's about a journey, it's about strength, and most of all it's about standing up on your own. Be prepared to have fun when you see it!

And finally, lets talk about Stargate: Atlantis, because most of you are, and I've been getting a ton of questions about the thing, so lets just get it out in the open. I know it's finally been revealed that Paul McGillion is leaving the show, and since I'm coming on the show, a lot of you have it in your head that I'm "replacing" him. First of all, our characters are quite different from each other. Second of all, Paul has a penis, so we're quite opposite from each other. Third of all, I'm not a regular cast member and I've only signed on to do a certain number of episodes (not 15 - or at least that was news to me when I heard that on the internet!). One thing I should tell you is that Paul and I are very close friends. He lives three blocks away from me (in my mom's building-- how weird and random is that?) and we see each other all the time. I can honestly say he's one of the sweetest and most lovely people to work with (the crew of Atlantis raves about him), and I really just adore him. I can't comment on the why in terms of his character's absense in the next season, but the best thing about sci fi is nothing is forever! It's like soap operas - like, maybe in Serenity 2 Wash will have an evil identical twin! (Yeah, Joss, I know, that idea sucks - and if it doesn't suck and you actually write that one day, I want credit for it) Anyway, I'm really excited about coming on to Atlantis and playing another prodigy-genius mechanic to genius doctor, I am truly moving up in the world! Maybe next time I'll play the president! heh heh. Just please have an open mind, and don't hate me - it's not my fault. I'm just an actor who jumped at the chance to work with a really fun cast in my favorite city (mine) and play a young smarty pants MD with a cool uniform. Can you blame me?

Lastly, I'm off to Arizona at the very beginning of the new year for Dark Con, and then hopefully another trip I can't say too much about quite yet... but Paris may be in the cards, at least on the way to our final destination, and viva la shop till I drop is happening, no matter what Matty says!

Best wishes for a beautiful and peaceful holiday season.

Love Jewel"

2 November 2006: Jewel Staite Updates Her Blog

Jewel Staite

Jewel Staite has updated her blog over at www.jewelstaite.net. She confirms her return to Stargate: Atlantis and attendance at the Big Damn Flanvention among other things. Here's what she had to say:

Having just received a request at the Serenity Cubed convention that I get off my ass and write again, I am obeying and sitting down to tell you some more drivel from the life of me.

I guess it's been quite a while, so shall I start with July? Most of it was spent lying on the beach here in my beautiful Vancouver with a plentitude of novels, White Spot veggie burgers, and Snapple. I did manage to get out to Toronto for my first-ever Canadian convention called TCon... had a blast.. met some fellow Canucks... drank more Snapple. Not long after that, my sister in law and brand-new niece moved back from Israel and were kind enough to bring what appeared to be the Norwalk virus with them, so a week was spent with my head over the toilet (one of those nights I was supposed to be singing at my friend Patrick Masse's farewell show, but barfing does not sound so good over the microphone so I skipped it). My husband caught it, the neighbors caught it, basically she took out the entire family and then some. Thanks, Claire.

Luckily, we were well enough in time for Matt's birthday, and good thing, because I surprised him with a weekend in Vegas, because nothing says romance like champagne and slot machines! His 27th was spent with me furtively guarding my "lucky" 25 cent slot machine while he glared at various roulette tables, hopelessly trying to win his hundred bucks back. Classy! But I've been told that's not much to lose, case in point being two guys about our age harping about how much they had lost ("Um, it's a little thing called I'm down two G's"), so we didn't feel so bad. It was an awesome time and I can't wait to go back.

After that, my agent Lisa and I took off to London for the Serenity Cubed convention, which was full of debauchery, lots of laughs, and late nights, as per the "ush". I love, love, love going to those conventions, even though they make me want to sleep for a week straight after. Thanks to all who made it even more memorable than the last, truly. Especially Sean Maher, because, well, you know why. On the way home, (or on a detour on the way home) Lisa and I went to Paris, where we stayed at the Ritz and drank Bloody Marys in the Hemmingway bar, bought trench coats and learned to say "Viva La France!" I have to say, though, that it really is the city of love, and I was missing my Matty something fierce, so I was more than happy to get on the plane and head home... That is, until I realized the guy sitting across from me was off his nut. Don't know what tipped me off - maybe it was him singing showtunes to himself about half an hour into the flight, or telling the flight attendant he was in love with her, or plain old asking me "am I mad??" We contemplated slipping a sleeping pill into his wine, but thought against it, especially since he conked out a few hours later. Thanks for the in-flight entertainment, crazy man!

Now that I'm home, I can confirm that I will be coming on to Stargate Atlantis for a few episodes. I still have no idea who I'm playing, but I do know it's female. I hope. Anyway, I'm really excited to be going back, and they're a great bunch of people and - major plus!! - it shoots at home! So watch for that next season.

I'll also be coming to New England (that chowder better be good, damnnit) for a convention in November called United Fan Con with the sci fi messiah himself, William Shatner. And as for the Flanvention? Oh, it's on.

10 October 2006: Tim Minear - Joss Whedon Comments on Drive

Apparantly, Tim Minear popped round to Joss Whedon's house the other day for dinner and whilst there showed him the pilot episode of his new show, Drive. Here's what Joss had to say about it on Whedonesque:

"Now if like me you're, yeah, awesome, Tim Minear comes over for dinner and shows you the pilot of DRIVE. Which was, yeah, awesome. Tim described it to me as "'Magnolia' with cars", which I got 'cause the characters are great, but that didn't prepare me for the intense cool driving action or the gorgeous shooting. Plus you can just see how the show works, which is not always the case with pilots. (Of course, it helps to have Tim sit there and spell out the upcoming twists, which is akin to watching them, as he's ever the spellbinder). Also, ginormous props to my old pal Melanie Lynskey, who's magical in it. It sould be on TV; TV would be grateful. I'm just sayin'. -j."

Hello, all. It's been a while since I've posted, and howdidy-doo. I'm posting today to you sci-fi fans, and especially RPGers about my good friend's new book, and subsequently, the new online game called the Rings of Orbis.
http://www.ringsoforbis.com/
I'm logged on, but haven't delved into the game yet. How many of you can figure it out, get back to me, and tell me how to win? Check out the book, I'll be bringing it with me to Cons- autographed, and give a few out. It's called THE SOFTWIRE, the first in a series, and I'm very proud of my pal PJ for writing it. He says he meets Browncoats all the time at conventions, and he can't get over how passionate you all are. He tells folks he knows me, I wonder if people believe him. I don't trust him, just based on looks, but that's my way. Give a shout out to PJ HAARSMA, check out his site, and tell him the Captain sent you.
People more clever than I, would you post this on other sites? People with sites, would you link to his site for me, too?
Keep up the Big Damn Love!

Nathan

23 August 2006: Joss Whedon -Top 25 TV Characters

After a discussion on Whedonesque concerning Slither writer and director James Gunn's Top 25 TV Characters List on his blog and how he left out Captain Mal Reynolds, Joss Whedon has compiled his own Top 25 TV Characters and posted them. Here's what he came up with:

Hi! Remember me? I don't. But I think I have something to do with writing stuff, or writing ABOUT stuff -- I might be a food critic. I'm pretty critical about food, so that's probably it.

Anywhy, I couldn't look at Mr Gunn's nice list without suddenly being compelled to make one of my own. What is it about lists? Are they like soft-shell crab with a mango coulis, where... actually I don't know where that's heading. Possibly to ADVENTURE! I made a list.

Following James' rules, but also adding a "no shows of my own" clause, here's the first awesome 25 I could come up with. Let the debate be debatey! (oh, also I'm not bothering to spell check, IMDB, or ask anyone about things I only partially remember. So best of luck knowing what the hell I'm typing about.) In no particular order:

1) #6. (See, it really is no particular order, or this would be about 5 later.) Patrick McGoohan retaining ultimate cool in the face of existential, Kalfka-esque shennanigans and a giant floating Blancmange.

2) George Michael Bluth. Arrested Development is impossible to choose from, but the buttoned-down kid is usually the character I can't stand and George Michael is frikkin' adorable. Poor little guy.

3) Does anybody remember the desperate last-minute revamp of "Beauty and the Beast"? Where they got all thrillery, killed Linda Hamilton and replaced her with Jo Anderson as a sort of female Will Graham (before half the characters on TV were sort of female Will Grahams-- before, in fact, Clarisse Starling)? Well she was awesome. Cool, and wicked beautiful, and being stalked by Lance Henriksen as a guy named "Snow"! The stuff of life! Show died in a month.

4) Belzer from Hill Street Blues. Guy could not partner with anyone who didn't die. The actor, the wannabe hero, the 'tard, the nice lady -- they were all meat for the Belzergrinder. I don't care how repetative it was -- he was feral, funny and human. Eating out of a can on X-mas, getting a call -- that's a wrong number -- and never for a moment feeling sorry for himself. Wow. I feel sorry for myself all the time, and I eat from very fancy cans.

5) Josh Lyman from the West Wing. Another 'throw a stone, hit a favorite', but Josh has a thing. That thing is called Donna.

6) Ed Asner in any show featuring Lou Grant. Solid, baby. Oh, I'll just slide my character from high comedy to high drama like people do all the time. What's that you say? Well, surely very often, yes? No?

7) Gordon Jackson: Mr Hudson the Butler in Upstairs Downstairs. The avatar of cool, except in that late episode where they made him cry over some young woman which was entirely unseemly.

8) Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe on Friends. Yeah, backlash etc, but that was one of the best written shows ever for a spell and when it was she could not miss. Really unique.

9) President Stands-With-A-Fist from BSG. The role she was born for. You wanna go head to head with Edward James Almos? Perhaps you don't remember what a bad-ass he was on Miami vice. So bad-ass, in fact, that he's

10) so there.

11) Rod Serling on the Twilight Zone. He wasn't a character per se, he was just TV at its finest and smoking at its coolest.

12) Quincy M.D. Or my wife will divorce me. But also, yeah.

13) Logan from V Mars. Smirking his way into TV history.

14) The american Office is another throw-a-stone, but I'm giving it up for Jim, 'cause I've watched that scene between him and Pam in the season 2 finale like 17 times and his readings are smooth like booze. Also, he's the person in that scene who's not married to James Gunn, so I can rant and nobody gets freaked. (I fear James as I fear few things.)

15) Agent Dale Cooper. 'Cause pie.

16) Finola Hughes, Anna Devane on General Hospital. Why does she flirt with me so?

17) Jonathan Banks in Wiseguy. Here's a guy doomed to play heavies in movies like "Freejack" -- throw some wire-rimmed glasses on him and he becomes the coolest man on the tube. (3rd use of 'cool'. This isclearly important to me, this 'cool'.) While Ken Wahl lost his mind and gained his weight, Banks anchored the show from first to last. Indelible.

18) Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. This may be stretching the rules, but your modern world frightens and confuses me and he's on the damn list.

19) Kristie MacNichol on Family. Early crush. Can't remember much more.

20) That car rental guy from Veronica Ma -- oh this is too cheesy even for me. Columbo.

21) Bea Arthur as Maude. Or in anything ever. But mostly Maude.

22) Jerry Orbach in Law and Order. I hated the obligatory wisecrack, but Jerry is New York personified (and a Broadway Hoofer) and as real as it gets...

23) ...Unless it gets to Dennis Farina in Crime Story, who actually WAS a cop before he started acting. Tough guy, great cars, whatashow. The bad guy gets nuked. NUKED.

24) Dick Van Dyke. He's diagnosing... murder! Also I think he had a sitcom.

25) House. If you saw him in Blackadder, even more so, but if you haven't, House. The last great humanist.

'Kay. That's that then. First off, what's up with all the cops? Even Finola on GenHo was Chief of Police. Second, I reserve the right to wake up tomorrow and scream bloody murder at remembering the 25 I actually like much better. In fact, I think I'll do it now. BLOODY MURRDERRRR!!!!!

I feel better. Back to work, Crachitt.

-Joss.
